Mental illness is all in your head…right?

Usually when people say, “It’s all in your head,” they mean that it’s just a situation of “mind over matter”, or they may even think the illness is contrived. Perhaps they aren’t implying that you made it up but simply that you’re “overthinking” or worrying about it too much.

Mental illness is a real issue in a real body. Mental illnesses can be traced back to specific sections of the brain. They can affect us in physiological ways. We don’t ask for it, nor are we able to control the development of it. Therapy can help, but it doesn’t often eradicate it so much as make it more manageable.
